Educator Social Security Info

In this video, we’re going to discuss your Social Security benefit and how it relates to your TRS pension.
First, it’s very important to understand that your TRS annuity is never reduced by Social Security. However, your TRS benefit may impact how much you receive in Social Security. You see, because TRS is a government pension, Social Security says it may reduce or offset your benefit.
Now, they do this through two regulations. The first regulation is called the Government Pension Offset, otherwise known as GPO. This offset applies to a member’s eligible spousal Social Security benefit. The second is through the Windfall Elimination provision, known as WEP. This provision applies to those who qualify for a Social Security benefit based on their own work history.
